U.S. City Water Quality Reports Are Out

Monday, December 14th, 2009

If you live in the U.S., you’ll be happy (or maybe not so happy, as the case may be) to know that information is becoming more transparent. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has released its latest figures on municipal water quality in the U.S. The former link goes to the EWG site itself, and the latter has links to other areas for water-loving exploration. I haven’t been able to drink water straight from the tap in my hometown of San Diego for decades—it’s only bottled or seriously filtered for me. Where does your city fall?

Electric Cars Take Another Step Forward

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

A couple of months ago, I learned from David Pogue about a company (Better Place) working to make electric cars a reality. I have been wondering how we were going to refuel our cars for longer distances, and Better Place has a plan in place.

They have charging stations already in place in Israel; these work when you park your car for the day while you’re at work or out for awhile. Yesterday, they unveiled the battery-swaping station they will need to keep you moving on those long-distance trips. Check out the YouTube video at the end to see a sample battery swap.

Major thumbs up for all involved. Make it happen, I will be one of the first to buy an electric car. :-D

Can you imagine 35-36km/liter? It may be on the way…

I really want to get a hybrid for my next car. The gas prices I’m seeing in the U.S. and Japan are just too high. Using a pre-paid card at a place around the corner here in Kumamoto, I paid ¥119 for a liter of gas the other day. That’s a discount price! I saw some places selling gas for ¥129 a liter! If you need a North American-centric reference, the discount price is about $US3.80 a gallon.

Back to hybrid’s: Honda’s Civic is winning all kinds of praise, and it is high on my list. Now rumor has it that they are developing a new hybrid version of the Honda Fit. Using the technology that is available now, analysts are predicting that a hybrid version of such a small car could get as much as 35 to 36 kilometers on a liter of gas (that’s 82-84 miles a gallon)!
